Closing the Circle
One of the first steps in the composting process, this electrically-powered machine sorts through the waste.
Off a dusty road near Vacaville, Ca., the crew at Jepson Prairie Organics is busy turning San Francisco’s waste into nutrient-rich compost that will feed certified organic soils across Northern California. San Francisco- based CUESA (Center for Urban Education and Sustainable Agriculture) sponsored a day-long farm tour that took us from Jepson Prairie to Eatwell Farm, where farmer Nigel Walker uses the compost to enrich his organic crop.
Lavender Fields
At Eatwell, over 40 different certified organic crops flourish each year, including lavender, lemon balm, lemon verbena and rose geranium, among dozens of fruits and vegetables. By using the bay area food scraps and compostable waste to supplement the soil that produces the fruits and veggies that are then sold back to the community, this farm has effectively closed the recycling circle.
Visit Eatwell Farm every Saturday at the Farmers’ Market at San Francisco’s Ferry Building.
